In today’s society there is a pill to cure or treat most diseases and infections. Centuries ago however, this wasn’t the case. Many of our ancestors used natural antibiotics to cure illnesses. Below are five natural antibiotics that work just as well as they did years ago.

Oregano & oregano oil

While oregano is a popular spice used to flavor some of our favorite Italian entrees, many people are completely unaware of its antibacterial properties. It’s been seen to help improve digestive function and even help some people lose weight. Carvacrol, an oil found in oregano, has shown to be quite effective in killing bacteria.

Honey

Honey is one of the best and most widely known natural antibiotics. It’s even been recorded that ancient Romans used honey during battles to help treat the wounds of fallen soldiers, as it helps prevent infection. As a natural antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic substance, honey has been one of mankind’s primary natural medicines for thousands of years.

It provides a boost to the immune system, removes toxins from our bodies, aids in digestion, and helps the liver function more efficiently.

Turmeric

You can eat turmeric, the spice commonly found in Indian food, or you can even rub it on your body to gain its health benefits. What’s even cooler is that you can mix together honey and turmeric into a paste that can be used to treat infected areas of the body.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil never gets the credit it deserves. It has natural anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties and is chock-full of antioxidants that can’t be gained from anything else. You can apply it externally or consume it raw. It enhances the immune system, helps thyroid function, improve brain function, and has been seen to balance cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Put a spoonful into your coffee in the mornings or in your meals throughout the day to give yourself more energy and clarity.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that grapefruit seed extract (GSE) was effective in combatting over 800 types of viruses and bacteria, over a hundred types of fungi, and a variety of different parasites.

It contains high levels of antioxidants, boosts the immune system, and helps our digestive functioning by promoting healthy bacteria in our guts.
