I vividly remember my mother\u2019s 37th<\/sup>\u00a0birthday. We had many guests, and the party went on until quite late. Everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves, but all I could think was,\u201d My mother is getting old, hope she doesn\u2019t die.\u201d At that point, 40 seemed so very far away that I couldn\u2019t possibly imagine a day would come when\u00a0I<\/em>\u00a0would reach that ripe old age.<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m older than she was on that day, and do I feel old? Not at all. Actually, I feel like life is just beginning! I am in fact, having the best time of my life. And, I\u2019ve realized that this is the youngest I\u2019ll ever be \u2014 time to enjoy my\u00a0youth.<\/em><\/p>\n

So what has changed since my childhood? Is it just my perception?<\/p>\n

With the increase in life expectancy from 50 in the beginning of the 19th<\/sup>century to 80 currently, it is obvious that what we consider\u00a0old<\/em>\u00a0has changed. At 40, we\u2019ve barely lived even\u00a0half<\/em>\u00a0our lives, and myriad possibilities abound ahead.<\/p>\n

Having finally reached that defining moment, I can now see things from the other side of the hill, and they don\u2019t look anywhere near as bleak as I had imagined. Sure, there\u2019ve been a few changes in my body \u2014 most things travelling south, of course. And my skin is not as taut as it once was, along with a slight thickening around the equatorial region. These things notwithstanding, I am a big fan of being in my 40\u2019s.<\/p>\n

And just in case you\u2019ve bought into the (terribly widespread) idea that your 40\u2019s are the beginning of the end, here are 7 reasons to believe otherwise!<\/p>\n

1) You Are Comfortable In Your Own Skin.<\/h3>\n

You\u2019ve now lived with yourself for 40 years, and have finally become quite familiar with yourself, inside and out. Yes, gravity may be beckoning various parts of your body, and you\u2019ve got a new vocabulary including words such as \u2018flabby\u2019, \u2018thick\u2019, \u2018plus-size\u2019, \u2018wrinkles\u2019 and \u2018grey hair\u2019, but there\u2019s also a new-found confidence and comfort level with both your body and your persona.<\/p>\n
